SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS FLASHING RED

Mar 16 2004

The Government today published its fourth report on progress towards sustainable development in the UK.

The `quality of life' barometer covers a wide range of topics including the economy, environment and crime. It revealed that traffic levels have risen, bird populations have fallen and more waste is being thrown away. Even where the Government claims to have made progress such as on climate change, it is failing to tackle key sectors such as the growth in aviation.

Friend of the Earth's Environmental Limits Coordinator, Roger Higman, said:

"Too many sustainability indicators are flashing red. Far from making progress, the Government is failing to tackle key environmental threats such as the growth in air and road traffic and the huge mountains of waste we generate. Air pollution is still a threat to public health and modern farming is having a devastating effect on wild birds. The Government has failed to prioritise environmental protection in its spending and taxation policies. Gordon Brown must take action in his Budget. If he doesn't,our quality of life will continue to suffer."
