New Government fund for green local transport
22 September 2010
Commenting on the new Government fund for sustainable local transport announced today, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Richard Dyer said:
"It's great that the Government will give councils dedicated funding to help them roll out sustainable transport initiatives to encourage walking, cycling and taking the bus, which will cut congestion and climate-changing CO2.
"But the devil is in the detail. To ensure a green transport revolution takes place the fund must be large enough, flexible and not introduced at the expense of money for other vital public transport like buses.
"Billions of pounds could be saved by cancelling polluting road building schemes. More than half of all UK car journeys are under five miles - advising people on greener ways to get around is a cheaper and easier way to reduce congestion."
