11 August 2005
Further evidence that building new nuclear power stations would be an expensive mistake emerged today when it was revealed that decommissioning Britain's nuclear power stations will cost billions of pounds more than was estimated originally.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority estimates the bill for 20 sites at around £56 billion - the previous estimate was £48 billion.
Friends of the Earth Executive Director Tony Juniper said:
"Nuclear power is an expensive liability with a long track record of huge cost overruns. But it won't be the nuclear industry that will foot the bill, it will be British taxpayers. It would be madness to increase our liabilities by building more nuclear power stations. Investment in clean renewable energy and energy efficiency is the only sane way forward."
