Press release
Alan Titchmarsh urged to stop using peat
15 April 2011
Commenting on news today (Friday 15 April 2011) that celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh has said that he plans to continue using peat-based compost, Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director, Craig Bennett, said:
"Alan Titchmarsh has done a lot to help raise awareness on environmental issues, so it's extremely disappointing he's encouraging gardeners to use planet-wrecking, peat-based composts.
"Peat bogs 'lock-up' climate changing pollution and are a precious home to some of our finest wildlife - trashing them for use in gardens is completely irresponsible.
"Gardeners are celebrated for being green-fingered - they should be green-minded too.
"I'd be delighted to join Mr Titchmarsh on a peat bog visit so he can see for himself the damage being done."
