Cameron must tackle Tory MEPs over climate vote

22 June 2011

David Cameron must tell Conservative MEPs to support the Coalition Government's pledge for tougher European action on climate change by backing EU proposals for a 30 per cent cut in emissions in a crucial vote in the European Parliament tomorrow, Friends of the Earth said today.

The call follows revelations today that the Prime Minister is facing a revolt from Conservative MEPs who are planning to vote against the proposals.

The Coalition Agreement says "we will push for the EU to demonstrate leadership in tackling international climate change, including by supporting an increase in the EU emission reduction target to 30% by 2020."

Friends of the Earth's Executive Director Andy Atkins said:

"David Cameron's pledge to lead the greenest Government ever will be seriously undermined if he can't even get his party's elected representatives to back official policy on climate change.

"The Prime Minister must show leadership by telling his MEPs to support proposals to cut European emissions by 30 per cent by 2020 - if he can get Ken Clarke to U-turn this shouldn't be too difficult.

"The call for tougher climate action is backed by over 70 leading European businesses who recognise that a green industrial revolution is the only way to create sustainable growth and new jobs."
