Traffic Levels Still Rising

31 July 2003

Traffic figures released by the Department of Transport today show traffic levels rose by 2.5 per cent between 2001 and 2002 [1].

Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"Traffic levels are still rising relentlessly, bringing more congestion and more pollution. In the light of John Prescott's pledge to reduce traffic levels, the figures show that transport remains one of the Government's big failings. And there's little prospect of change while the Secretary of State for Transport persists in thinking that building roads and widening motorways is the answer".

Traffic levels in 2002 were 7.9% higher than in 1997.
