TUC calls for tougher climate law
11 September 2007
The TUC has today passed a motion calling on the Government to strengthen its "insufficiently ambitious" plans for a new law to tackle climate change. The move has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth which has led the campaign for new legislation.
Friends of the Earth director, Tony Juniper said:
"The TUC are right to describe Government plans for a climate change law aimed at cutting UK emissions by 60 per cent as "insufficiently ambitious". Ministers must get serious about the challenge we face and ensure that its legislation proposals are much tougher. This means aiming for bigger cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, which scientists say are required, and ensuring that the UK's share of international emissions from aviation and shipping are also included."
1. The Government is due to publish final details of its proposals for a new law to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions later this autumn. Friends of the Earth has led the call for a new climate change law through The Big Ask climate campaign [1], which was launched in 2005. Although the environmental campaign group is delighted that the Government is introducing climate legislation, the organisation says that it must be much stronger if it is to be effective.
