Press Release

UK needs a clean safe, energy policy

Nov 29 2005

Following today's announcement of a Government Energy Review, Friends of the Earth director, Tony Juniper, said:

"The solution to climate change and energy security will be found in the development of clean and safe energy sources, including renewable power, energy efficiency and the cleaner use of fossil fuels. We are confident that the review announced today, if conducted fairly, will reach this conclusion too. But we are deeply worried that the Prime Minister has fallen for the nuclear spin, and has already made up his mind.

"The Energy Review must seriously look at all our energy needs, not just electricity production. This means that the Government will need to address soaring emissions from fossil-fuel hungry transport and how we will heat our homes in the future. Friends of the Earth is calling for mandatory fuel-efficiency standards for cars to be made twice as efficient as they are today. The use of biomass and solar power could also help cut emissions from heating."

"Nuclear power is dangerous, expensive and unnecessary. It's time to abandon this white elephant and embrace sensible and sustainable energy solutions for the 21st century."
