UK takes the lead on offshore wind
20 January 2011
Welcoming news that the UK leads the world in the offshore wind installation industry, published today [Thursday 20 January 2011], Friends of the Earth's Senior Climate Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"It's great that we have blown away the competition to become Europe's leader in offshore wind - which must now become a major source of clean, green power for the UK.
"Sadly the UK's record on renewable energy is still dismal, despite years of Government promises.
"We urgently need to invest in green energy projects - making sure renewable energy is given the chance to succeed.
"The Government's proposed reform of the electricity market is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to put the structure in place to enable the cost-effective delivery of low carbon energy.
"A properly capitalised Green Investment Bank is also essential to ensure adequate funding for big off-shore wind projects.
"Investing in renewable energy will boost our economy by creating new green industries and jobs - Ministers must ensure adequate funding and make the UK a world leader in tackling climate change."
