US must act on oil addiction
1 February 2006
US President Bush talked about America's oil addiction during his State of the Union address last night. Mr Bush said "this country can dramatically improve our environment - move beyond a petroleum-based economy - and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past."
Friends of the Earth International's climate campaigner Catherine Pearce said:
"The President was right to highlight his country's addiction to oil: its one of the main reasons why the US is the world's biggest polluter of climate-changing gases. Unfortunately his administration refuses to join the rest of the world in tackling the problem, and he ignored it again in his speech.
"The United States could reduce its dependence on oil and cut emissions by tackling energy waste and investing in renewables and cleaner technology. But it's unclear whether President Bush has actually offered anything new, and his record to date casts doubt on whether he has the political will to act.
"New nuclear stations are not the solution. Cars and planes don't run on nuclear energy - the President must tackle his country's gas-guzzling habits instead. And to do that he will need to stand up to the powerful corporations who make immense profits from business as usual."
