Tribute to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Wangari Maathai

Commenting on the death today of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Wangari Maathai, who was a patron of Friends of the Earth International, Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland Executive Director Andy Atkins said:
"Wangari Maathai was a hugely inspirational figure who worked tirelessly for a fairer and greener planet.
"She was also a much loved and valued patron of Friends of the Earth International, who will be sorely missed.
"Our thoughts are with her family and her colleagues in the Green Belt Movement - she has left a wonderful legacy for people in Kenya and the wider world."

1. Since founding the Green Belt Movement in Kenya in 1977 Dr Wangari Maathai helped protect people's access to forests and natural resources. As a result of her work more than 20 million trees have been planted on farms, in schools and church grounds. Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
