Government announces waste stategy review

15 June 2010

Commenting on Caroline Spelman announcing a review of England's waste strategy, Friends of the Earth's resource use campaigner Julian Kirby said:

"The Government is right to review England's waste policy - the UK wastes over £650 million every year burying and burning precious materials that should be recycled.

"The Environment Secretary must scrap incineration subsidies introduced by Labour and invest instead in waste prevention, anaerobic digestion and increased recycling - including a 75 per cent recycling target for England and stronger packaging laws.

"But councils must not use the review as an excuse to dither on improving reuse and recycling services - acting now will make better use of finite resources, slash carbon emissions, save cash, and create new jobs".

ENDS

Notes:

1. England's recycling ambition is lagging way behind those of Scotland and Wales.
