Yorkshire wind farm good news for jobs

9 February 2011

Welcoming the go-ahead for a new offshore wind farm off the Yorkshire coast, which will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 150,000 homes, Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"This new wind farm is great news for people in Yorkshire and the environment.

"The UK's renewable energy potential is huge - and with Government support this country could be a world leader in green power.

"Ministers must throw their weight behind the the green energy revolution to slash carbon emissions and create thousands of new green jobs and business opportunities."

ENDS

Notes to editors:

1. Friends of the Earth is also calling on Ministers to increase certainty for investors in offshore wind by establishing a properly-funded Green Investment Bank. The green campaigning charity is also urging the Government to amend its electricity market reforms to boost renewable energy development.

2. Energy company E.ON was granted permission today to construct the 77 turbine Humber Gateway wind farm, around five miles off the Holderness coast in Yorkshire.
