Winter deaths figures are national disgrace
22 November 2011
Responding to the new winter deaths figures for England and Wales in 2010/11, Friends of the Earth's Energy Campaigner Dave Timms said:
"It is a national disgrace that every winter thousands of older people die as a result of high energy bills and cold, badly insulated homes.
"This is an entirely preventable tragedy yet the Government has cut pensioners' winter fuel payments and Treasury funding for energy efficiency.
"The big energy companies are making billions from our broken energy system - Ministers must step in and launch a national drive to make sure everyone can afford to keep warm and a public inquiry into the big energy stitch-up."
