Supporter of the week: Tom Lloyd-Smith
To celebrate Friends of the Earth's 40th anniversary, I've been talking to some of the supporters who've made it all possible. Adventure Cyclist Tom Lloyd-Smith (right) told me how he's been crossing continents to raise money for a great cause.
What made you travel?
"After three years in my job as a civil servant, I was eligible for a career break.
"I decided to cycle as it struck me as a purer, cheaper and healthier way of seeing the world.
"And I raised £3,000 and counting for Friends of the Earth.
"Apart from feeling good, it gives you incentive to keep going.
Tell us about the route you took
"Starting from home, my route took me across Europe to Iran, United Arab Emirates, and ended at Kanyakumari, India's most southerly point.
"Everywhere I went, people were kind and willing to help.
In some villages they treated me like a lost son, arguing over who's going to put you up for the night, feed you and so on.
"It's something I've brought back with me to London, to be kinder to people.
And the future?
"People keep asking how the trip has changed me. I think it's taught me not to beat myself up about bad decisions. It's much easier if you put them behind you and keep going."
Inspired by Tom's story? If you like cycling and want to raise money for Friends of the Earth, why not join the Big Green Bike Ride next year.
