We meet on the first Wednesday of every month (except August) at Greenmeadow Golf & Country Club, Treherbert Road, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran. Meetings begin at 7.30pm.
Our group covers the Torfaen County Borough Council area.
Local membership annual costs are just £5 for single membership, £8 for family/joint membership (concessionary rates are £3 single & £6 family/joint membership).
We support and campaign on some of the national and global issues - most recently: GM food; climate change; palm oil.
Locally our main campaigns are around planning issues with environmental implications. Details of all planning applications submitted to Torfaen CBC are copied to us and we aim to comment on those with potential significant environmental destruction.
Torfaen FOE grew out of Fight the Plan Group, and is very proud of the 10 year delay and the adaptations instigated to the council's proposal to build 1,200 houses at South Sebastopol - their name for what is currently open countryside between Cwmbran and Pontypool. This latter campaign was started and spearheaded by the late, great Mike Jacob, and was instrumental in the setting up of the Torfaen FOE group. Although Fight the Plan Group no longer exists, Torfaen FOE continues to liaise with Torfaen CBC in order to try and minimise the environmental destruction to the countryside in this area.
We actively network with other local groups and currently have links with JOHN FIELDING DEVELOPMENT GROUP, STOP THE QUARRY ( www.stopthequarry.blogspot.com ) & FRIENDS OF LLANFRECHFA GRANGE ( www.eveleigh.me.uk/flag ).
Promotion of self help ideas to enable individuals and communities to safeguard their environment is another aim, and to this end we maintain, and share with anyone wanting information, a comprehensive library of current planning regulations.
For upcoming events and actions you can take, please visit our website soon - we are currently updating and rebuilding it, but it should be ready before too long: www.torfaenfoe.org.uk.
Please also bear in mind that we are all volunteers and most of us have full time jobs too!
