Put your rubbish out on the doorstep for recycling and you're doing something great

* for the environment
* for people affected by industries like mining, energy and logging.

The reason you can do this? Because people like you campaigned for better waste laws.

The result was the Household Waste Recycling Act, which became law in 2003. We drafted this act on sound research and a clear vision of how much better things can be.

The law makes local councils burn and bury less and recycle and re-use more.

Result: easier for us all to do the right thing.

Now we're asking for targets so that by 2015 we're recycling three-quarters of our waste. Stick with us.

I want to thank Martyn Williams of Friends of the Earth for the huge amount of assistance that he has given me in preparing the Recycling Bill.
