Food waste bins get thumbs up13 September 2011
More than 80% of people with food waste collections say they're no trouble - and all councils should provide them.
Friends of the Earth's new research rubbishes claims by a Government minister that householders don't want to use food waste bins.
Instead it shows that:
- The vast majority think food waste collections are hassle-free.
- 3 out of every 4 people think all councils should provide the service.
Saving the pounds
There's evidence that weekly food waste pick-ups can help us cut down the amount of food we throw away.
Julian Kirby, Waste Campaigner, Friends of the Earth
That's good news for our bank balances and the environment - as we currently throw away a third of our food. But at the moment, fewer than half of England's local authorities collect food waste, although all authorities in Wales do.
Friends of the Earth wants David Cameron to set a goal to halve the rubbish England throws away by the end of the decade. We're calling for:
- More quality recycling
Ideally with kerbside separation to make life easier for people. - Waste prevention
With better product design and less packaging. - An end to waste incineration
And to burning and landfilling recyclable materials.
