Power Up the valleys2 June 2011
Friends of the Earth's Rights and Justice team held a training day in South Wales for the residents of Merthyr and surrounding towns.
This was to help support concerned community members with their campaign against the threat of the proposed Covanta incinerator.
We held workshops exploring the new fast track planning process, and how to write effective submissions.
We also provided legal advice on rights and air quality levels.
Community members took part in a role play - practising ways of presenting their case in front of the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC).
Overall the day left people feeling empowered and inspired.
Next steps
The planning process begins in June with the examination of the incinerator application. Friends of the Earth will continue to work with local communities to oppose it.
