Why I'm doing the Big Green Bike Ride

I have a habit of taking on more than I can handle. I went to live in France when all I could say was "I am 15 years old and live in the north of England", neither of which was true.

This time I've signed up for two days - and 150 miles - of the Big Green Bike Ride. This should be particularly challenging as the 3-mile cycle to and from work really tires me out. Whoopsie.

It's not because I love cycling or because I particularly want a challenge...so why am I doing it?

Food and sleep. I've never done a challenge event before, partly because I worry about food and sleeping arrangements - I'm not a nice person when I haven't slept well. As I'm involved in organising the event, I know there will be good food (including plenty of veggie and vegan food) and I'll get some nice sleepy time. Oh, and there's a support truck that I might take advantage of.

It's payback time. Perhaps it's my age, but doesn't everyone seem to be active for charity these days? Marathon here, triathlon there, I've even sponsored people for walking. Seriously, walking? So, with Big Green Bike Ride my friends can re-pay the favour and find out more about Friends of the Earth. I've already weakened their resistance by bending their ear about soy plantations and turning off plugs.

I really love Edinburgh. We'll finish the ride on Friday evening, have a lovely meal to celebrate (fizzy wine anyone?) and then I'll spend the rest of the weekend pottering around Edinburgh. I've already planned my veggie feast at Black Bo's. Mmm.

So even if you're not a cyclist, there are loads of reasons to get involved. Even if it is just to get back at your friends and spend a weekend in Edinburgh.
