Historic Victory Over NIREX
A Major Blow Against Nuclear Industry
FOE's CASE AT THE NIREX INQUIRY
The management of radioactive waste presents one of the most difficult environmental problems faced by industrial countries.
In 1982, the UK nuclear industry set up Nirex, the Nuclear Industry Radioactive
Waste Executive, to develop a programme of underground disposal for these wastes.
In 1992, Nirex announced that it planned to begin underground construction work at Sellafield in Cumbria.
Friends of the Earth is deeply concerned that the current proposal is premature as insufficient preparatory work has been carried out.
From September 1995 to February 1996 a Planning Inquiry into Nirex's proposal was held.
The objective of publishing these proofs is to make them available for peer review. We would welcome any comments on the proofs. In particular, reference to errors or omissions would be especially
welcomed in order that these may be addressed.
