The movement to save Stonehenge World Heritage Site just keeps on growing
The landscape around Stonehenge is one of the most remarkable places on Earth.
The wonder of Stonehenge
This landscape has been held sacred for a hundred and more generations.
It is a treasure trove of our past, still to yield its secrets.
But don’t just take our word for it. Just last week three prominent historians joined forces to stress its wonder and importance.
It's no surprise that the whole area has been designated a World Heritage Site. A place that our Government has committed to safeguard for all of us.
But now the Government plans to break that promise
A major expansion of the A303 trunk road is planned right across the whole landscape.
While the part of the road closest to the stones would be buried in a tunnel, over one third of the road would still be above ground within the World Heritage Site. The new plans mean the road would have more extreme impact on the landscape, with dual carriageways descending through deepening cuttings to the tunnel mouth.
The road would be a massive scar on the landscape for all time.
How you can help
Friends of the Earth is actively supporting the Stonehenge Alliance to resist these plans. Only a public outcry will force a change of thinking.
Please support the Alliance by signing their petition.
And if you'd like to do more, please do get in touch.
Together we can keep this landscape safe for future generations.
