Public backs safer energy over nuclear

Three-quarters of the public want new investment in renewable energy and energy saving according to a new poll commissioned by Friends of the Earth.

Only 9 per cent want to put investment in nuclear power put first.

For decades governments have put fossil fuels and nuclear power first at the expense of renewable power and energy saving.

Now we have a dilapidated and leaky building stock and we’re close to the bottom of the renewable energy league table in Europe.

This is despite having the best natural resources for generating power - like wind - at our disposal.

But the UK can produce all the energy it needs and meet carbon dioxide reduction targets without nuclear power.

We can do the 80% reduction in emissions by 2050 without new nuclear, but it will require a big effort on carbon capture and storage and renewables
