Responding to the publication today (Thursday 29 November 2012) of the Government’s Energy Bill, Friends of the Earth’s Executive Director Andy Atkins said:
“This Energy Bill will lock the nation into increasingly expensive gas, condemn cash-strapped households to rising fuel bills and threatens the nation’s targets for tackling climate change.
“Ministers must nail the lie that green policies are behind soaring fuel bills – it’s the rocketing price of gas that’s overwhelmingly responsible for the misery inflicted on consumers.
“MPs must support an amendment for a decarbonisation target to give businesses confidence to invest in clean energy to deliver new jobs and investment and a power system we can all afford.”
Notes to editors:
1.Last week, Friends of the Earth published the names of over 100 businesses, parties and charities backing the inclusion of a target in the Energy Bill to switch to green electricity by 2030. The Chancellor George Osborne, and energy companies Centrica and RWE, were shown to be the only major public opposition.
2. Friends of the Earth welcomes the cash announced for wind power to enable the Government to meet its legal obligations on renewable targets.
3. Friends of the Earth’s Clean British Energy campaign, backed by Deborah Meaden, is urging the Government to listen to the public and transform our broken energy system by developing clean and affordable power from our wind, sun and water. For too long the Big Six energy companies have locked Britain into importing costly gas and coal – causing our fuel bills to rocket. Now 85 per cent of people want the Government to back UK renewable power instead. This, and cutting energy waste, will stabilise fuel bills and create new jobs.
